Nzulenzu Village on stillt

Nzulezo is a village on stillt over the lake Tadane. Nzulezo village is located not too far from Beyin in the Central Region of Ghana. The village is only accessible by canoe, the duration of the trip to the village can take on average between 40-50 minutes. The name Nzulezu means “surface of the water” in Nzema, a dialect spoken in the region. The inhabitants of the Nzulezu village came from Oualata a city in current Mauritania that was part of the old Ghanaian empire.

Nzulezo Western Region

You can easily hire a boat and a tour guide from the tourist office which is situated not too far from the lake. After this, you will be directed to the boats with your tour guide (in our case the tour guide came to get us from the tourist office). His name was Francis, he made our trip wonderful, we were only 3 people on the canoe on that day, altogether 4. Going through the lake is a wonderful experience as you go through the various jungle-like forest where raffia palm undergrow. Paddling through the water can be a very strenuous experience if you have never done it, but at the same time can be very relaxing once you got past the jungle like forest and is paddling in the middle of the lake with nothing in sight. You will, of course, get help from your tour guide and your “journey colleagues” on that day. Once you reach the Nzulezo village you will notice that the village has street and avenues. A shrine is visible not too far from the village, only the fetish priest is allowed to enter the shrine where he makes an offering and listens to premonitions from the elders.  The Nzulezu village also has a school and a church, electricity is also available to the village.

You will be able to have a look at the school and the church, some of the school children go every morning to school in Benyin and after school come back to Nzulezu. Once leaving you will leave and in the canoe back, it will make you think, that despite all the hardship that people may face such as Medical facility it seems that life goes on as normal and they are still moving forward. Leaving the place will feel like a dream when you just left a place of purity where everyone was very quiet.

I will advise lively to anyone to make the experience on visit the Nzulezo still village, the place was an amazing experience. The village is part of the UNESCO world heritage it was added in 2000.
